I enjoy simple things: solitude, cheap sheet cake, and sunlight. I also believe that white is, in fact, a color. Bring me fresh flowers and we can be friends.

The Corkboard: Revisited

Last week, when I repainted and repurposed my cork board from the kitchen, my original plan had been to keep the cork board on the small wall to the left of the desk and to hang two or three white shelves directly above my desk for storage and other pretty things.

I had originally been inspired by this image:

When I had completed the first step by painting and moving my cork board, I thought I had significantly improved my desk area.

Therefore, The main purpose of my Saturday trip to Ikea was to pick up two or three glossy white Lack shelves. After much convincing from my father that there was not enough height on the wall for three shelves, I came home with two. Once home, I was further proven wrong for many reasons.
1. The 43" shelves I had chosen got too close to the cork board and it made for an awkward situation at the corner where the two walls met.

2. Having two shelves required one shelf to be almost directly above my lampshade, which blocked a lot of light.

More often than not, even if I think I have the perfect spot to hang a piece of artwork or place a piece of furniture, I need to live with it for a week or two before I decide if I am really happy with it.
Which is how I came up with a completely different idea for my cork board and shelf:

Which just seems to work more naturally.  The shelf is high enough that it doesn't block a lot of light, and the space is less cluttered than it would be with two shelves and a cork board.

(P.S- Please excuse the box under my desk.  I don't know why I didn't move it to take the picture. That's about as real as it gets, I guess)

Had a great weekend all before I came down with a horrendous cold. If anyone loves beautiful spaces - Imperial No. Nine is an absolute must. I kind of want to live in there for the rest of my life.  Also had a very successful trip to IKEA - always fun.

Recipe: Bluberry, Avocado, Spinach Smoothie

Some days after a workout, I am not hungry for a heavy meal but instead crave something cold and refreshing.  Recently, I tried to make a smoothie that would satisfy my craving while still giving me the protein and other nutrients I needed. I worked off of this recipe, and altered it work with what I had readily available in my fridge.

1 banana
A large handfull of spinach
Frozen blueberries
1/2 an avocado
Almond milk
Protein powder
Honey or agave nectar

I didn't have walnuts on hand as the original recipe called for so I used some of my protein powder instead. As mentioned on The Scattered Cook, the blueberries are full of vitamin C; the spinach is full of calcium, vitamin K, and iron; and the banana adds fiber and potassium, which makes this the perfect "after a workout smoothie".
I don't use exact proportions when I make smoothies. I just guess and add where needed to taste, so I start with smaller portions, and add to my liking.

Try it! You'll be suprised how filling this smoothie can be!

Repaint and Repurpose: The Cork Board

I've had this cork board since college. When I moved into my apartment, it was one of the first things I hung up in the kitchen to keep my reminders and random souvenirs. I bought it in a beige antique / country finish, and that is how it hung there, until I finally got around to repurposing it.

After a while, I realized I didn't like the cork board in the kitchen.  My kitchen is small and I don't like clutter; the cork board had begun to turn into a funeral home for any paper products that I didn't know what to do with, and really had no relevance to the kitchen.

Since scoring this parsons desk on Craigslist for $80 (!!!!!!!!!), I've been working on creating my own little work station in my "room".  A few coats of semi gloss white spray paint (my favorite!) and I have a new, more appropriate, home for my new cork board.

Now I am thinking about some open shelves above my desk and a desk chair.

Recipe: Does this count as fried rice?

I'd like to say that every night I come home and make an extravagant meal, but I am really bad at lying. Most days, after I've gotten home from work, the gym, and maybe (more often than not) met a friend for a glass of wine, I just want to eat something fast, clean up, and get to bed.

I am not really one to have any prepared foods or leftovers lingering in my refrigerator or pantry, so I always have to start from scratch. Most days, I just start throwing some things into a pan and hoping it turns into something edible.

In doing this, I have created what I like to think of as my take on fried rice. I started by sauteing some spinach and onions in a tiny bit of canola oil. I then added some leftover brown rice I had in the fridge.  I was looking for a protein when it dawned upon me to crack an egg into my concoction as well. The end product was heavenly, took about 6 minutes, and was totally satisfying.

Definitely something I will continue to experiment with depending on what's in the fridge!

I Want Wednesday

During the winter months, I have the tendency to transform into a true wench. I slump into hibernation and can't get out of my slump. I think it has something to do with having to wear a puffer coat. How unattractive are they?
This week I've been feeling quite grizzly; I can't snap out of it (hence the lack of regular blog posts). Waking up in the morning and picking out an appropriate work outfit is not something I look forward to. Days like this I want to just resort to the all time classic - black on black on black on black.

Is it time for spring yet?

I Want Wednesday

I have been searching for a new gym bag for a while now.  I don't want something that actually looks like a gym bag, because I bring it to work with me in the morning and prefer to look put together.

I think I've found the perfect bag - just have to check how much stuff I can actually fit in there..

Really?!? This is my life mantra.  It's like someone made a tote bag specifically for me.

Room of the Day

Once I have the money saved up (so, basically once I win the lottery), I plan on gutting my entire bathroom and starting from new.  I love clean, refreshing bathrooms - but these can come in many forms.  I have been saving images on my pinterest inspiration board for quite some time, but I still can't seem to identify a cohesive style that I am drawn to.

This bathroom is one of my favorites.  Classic, clean, and not fussy at all. Something that you can't really get tired of.

You can't go wrong with white subway tile, and grey is one of my favorite colors.
What do you think?
