I enjoy simple things: solitude, cheap sheet cake, and sunlight. I also believe that white is, in fact, a color. Bring me fresh flowers and we can be friends.

Hunter Lake - Summer Session

The week is almost over and I know the day is going to drag because I CANNOT WAIT to get to Hunter Lake for a weekend of slumber parties, truth or dare, and painting each others nails with my best girl friends (just kidding - sort of).

Last time we were up there it was fall and it was the perfect weekend.  I'm super excited for fresh lunches, home made ice cream sandwiches, and laying out on the dock - just to name a few things

I'll also get to check two things off of my summer to-do list, as we are planning on spending Sunday at some amazing wineries!

I wish summer lasted forever

Pops of Pink

I've switched back over from my clothing shopping spree to my home shopping spree. It's been a while since I've added anything new to my apartment and I'm feeling unaccomplished.  Even so, I've been thinking about the large rug I desperately need in my "family room" and my imagination keeps churning up images with a bold fuchsia rug.  Preferably fuchsia and white or grey in some kind of geometric pattern - chevron maybe?

The color is quite fun and in your face while still holding on to its femininity, which only makes me love it more.  It makes me shudder to think that one day I will have to compromise my colorful, girly design aesthetic for something gender neutral.
Then again, the willingness to compromise has never been one of my strong points.

The Weekender

I've been on the go all summer - literally. I haven't spent a full weekend in the city since the beginning of June - not that I mind escaping the sweltering heat.  My biggest problem with the weekend getaway is that I have been toting around a bright pink Kipling weekender circa 1992 (Yes, my troubles are earth shattering).

My second biggest problem is picking out a new one:

The vintage southwest Navajo bag is winning in my books, but the only problem is that it's on eBay.  I guess I shouldn't have put it on here for you to grab. Please don't outbid me, or else I'll have not two, but three earth shattering problems - and it's summertime.
No room for stress.

Weekend in Pictures

Even though it rained most of the weekend, we managed to get in some quality time at the pool bar, fall in love with Kid Cudi all over again, eat plenty of goodies, and even make a quick shopping trip.

My favorite part of the weekend: missing my bus and being forced to spend some quality time with the bartender at the Golden Fleece Tavern in Dover.  Proof that there's nothing that a glass of wine and some photo hunt cant fix.

Hardcore

I usually gravitate to either soft and flowy or structured and classic pieces when I get dressed, but there is a biker boot and leather jacket wearing part of me that just wants to bedazzle everything in my closet with hardcore studs. I've been gathering inspiration forever, but I have yet to make the effort to find and purchase a Bedazzler.

Here are some of my favorites

Maybe this post will make me JUST DO IT?

Weekend in Pictures

Slow start to the week.
Started off the weekend with good OLD friends at the Boat Basin (my favorite place on the UWS) and spent the rest of the weekend at home in Jersey.  Sometimes its nice to eat out on the deck and stare at the miles of bushy broccoli-like trees out in the distance and drive to the store and wake up to bustling in the kitchen.
I love home.

Happy Summer Friday

Finally Friday!

I feel like I've been on the run for weeks and am excited to spend the weekend with my favorite girls (my mom, sister, and cousin) and to take time to just relax.

Some fun weekend ideas:
1. Try out a new complicated recipe and don't clean up the mess until you've tasted the final product
2. Wake up, make a cup of coffee, and get back in bed. How often do you actually get to enjoy the glory of your crumpled sheets?
3. Tackle that DIY project that's been on your to-do list
4. Grab a book and head to the beach solo
5. Have your friends over for brunch, lunch, or dinner - al fresco
6. Plant your own herb garden
7. DO NOTHING

Happy Friday!

Recipe: Health Salad

Most of my weird eating habits were acquired from hanging out with my friend Allison over the years.  From pickled everything to hearts of palm and love of hummus, it all stemmed from the big kitchen island in her family's home in New Jersey.  Health salad is one of my favorite side dishes that always reminds me of her house (along with a great cup of coffee).

The side dish is great on its own, in salad, or on a sandwich!

I make this recipe the easy way (pre-cut cabbage and broccoli slaw), which means it takes less than 10 minutes to prepare because I don't have to shred much.  The best part is that it gets better the longer it stays in the refrigerator.

Ingredients:
1 bag of shredded green cabbage
1/2 bag of broccoli slaw
1 red pepper
1 cucumber
1 red onion
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup canola oil
3/4 cup white vinegar
1 tsp salt

Directions:

1. Combine the water, oil, vinegar, and salt in a large bowl. Stir until salt is dissolved

2. Slice red pepper, cucumber, and red onion very finely (the thinner the better)

3. Mix all vegetables - cabbage, broccoli slaw, red pepper, cucumber, and red onion - in the bowl and mix to make sure all gets coated with the oil/vinegar mixture.

4. Transfer to a tupperware or cover bowl and put in refrigerator over night.

The veggies will absorb the oil/vinegar mixture and begin to soften over time.

Serve cold.

Wake up

So this morning I woke up and it was Tuesday.  Not just any Tuesday, it was Tuesday, July 12th.

That means it is full blown summer and full blown wanderlust is in full swing.

Saturday was the first time I felt the breeze off the bay on my slightly toasted skin and actually acknowledged the tingling warmth enveloping my body as I napped under the orange sky.  Needless to say, anxiety hit. Summer is moving fast, and I am not ready to let it go, so I made a list of things to do before summer's over. And have granted myself the right to add and add and add to the list until I'm satisfied (I'm never satisfied)

In no particular order:

1. Go to Coney Island
2. Put knobs on my kitchen cabinets
3. Paint my Craig's List mirror
4. Spend a weekend at a Lake (preferably Hunter Lake)
5. Go to a winery (or more than one)
6. Go to Governor's Island
7. Attend an outdoor concert
8. Make my DIY chandelier
9. Re-paint the bathroom (chevron anyone?)
10. Have a summer BBQ
11.  Bake a rainbow cake
12. Eat crabs with a crab mallet
13. Float on the rafts cocktail in hand at Seacrets in Ocean City with three specific babes.
14. Swim in the ocean until my fingers are pruney

Ready. Set. Go.

DIY:Braided Hex Nut Bracelet

I came across this DIY braided hex nut bracelet about six months ago and quickly ran out to the nearest hardware store to pick up my supplies (all two of them).  They have been sitting in a bag in my closet since then.  I finally got around to doing the project last night because I had bought neon twine and I'd like to use it on my skin while I have a fresh Independence Day tan. Duh.

{finished!}

It kind of looks like something Madewell would sell for $40 and I kind of love it. I want to make a ton more in different colors.  All you need is twine and hex nuts and a pair of scissors and you're good to go.

Get the full instructions here. Try it, it'll make you look as cool as me.

Weekend in Pictures

I spent the majority of the weekend enjoying myself instead of enjoying my viewfinder, resulting in only three remotely acceptable photographs.  I still have to get used to being the girl with the camera.  Four days full of bloody marys, sweating at Used to Be's, the shoe shining song, and cursing myself for a painful swagger due to a bike ride from Mantoloking to Ocean Beach I swore I'd never do again last summer (I unfortunately didn't remember how far it was until I was halfway there).  The fourth falling on a Monday didn't work out so horribly either because for the first time in my life I saw the New York City fireworks.
Pretty nifty.

Sadly, the countdown begins until next year.
I hope that some things never change!

I Want Wednesday

I love letters.

Someone once asked me why I own so many things with the letter "m"- earrings, necklaces, notepads, key hooks, mugs, etc. No answer really. I guess in case I forget my name?

Anyway, I've got an "m" for my ear, an "m" for my neck, now I just need an "m" for my fingers!

I actually have been following the catbird blog for quite some time and never really looked into where the shop was. One night while walking in Williamsburg I noticed a familiar sign and saw the catbird logo and have been dying to go back since.  I haven't been to the actual store yet but have spent countless hours online window shopping on the website.  It is the perfect spot for buying gifts for anyone, even yourself (my favorite kind of gift).

These rings are so cute and dainty, I'd like to buy myself one for the next 5 occasions so I can spell "mina" on my fingers (plus a little symbol).

What to celebrate?

Happy 4th of July!

Headed to my favorite place in the world with my favorite people in the world!

Lots of bloody marys, scrabble, poolside dancing, and lobster- with no judgement for wearing a bib.
